The Maghreb-American Health Foundation's team composed of 17 American volunteer medical professionals, specialized in neurosurgery, cardiology, and anesthesia from University Minnesota Hospital, Nicklaus Children Hospital in Miami, Georgia Health Sciences University, Adventist Hinsdale Hospital and Advocate Christ Medical Center worked jointly with the local Algerian medical doctors to provide much needed medical treatment to 35 children with ages varying from 1 to 14 years-old.

The children suffering from multiple forms of Spina Bifida were the major medical cases targeted in the Medea Mission 2016. The US doctors worked closely with their Algerian counterparts, to use the latest surgical techniques, advanced surgical equipment, and overall multi-disciplinary approach to treat the most complex forms of Spina Bifida.

The objectives of the mission were to empower the local surgical team with the latest techniques used in the treatment of complex Spina Bifida cases and help them make their facility a center of excellence at the regional level.

During the Mission Medea 2017, the efforts of collaboration and exchange lead to the first of its kind surgical procedures through telemedicine between the Miami Children’s Hospital and the hospital of Medea.
